About the Black Down Syndrome Association

Dad and sons from KelliThe Black Down Syndrome Association is helping to create a more inclusive and equitable society by providing a culturally competent safe space for Black people with disabilities by promoting inclusivity, addressing systemic disparities, and supporting individuals in their journey towards a more fulfilling and equitable life. We recognize and honor the diverse experiences and identities within the Black community while providing the necessary resources and support to overcome barriers and promote positive change.

In addition to connecting families with local Down syndrome resources in their local area, BDSA currently operates an online support community. Serving almost 1000 families, this community serves as a safe space where families can build relationships, share stories, exchange advice, and create a support network that understands and empathizes with their unique challenges. Our families provide affirmation and validation to one another, acknowledging their unique experiences, strengths, and contributions and fosters an environment where individuals feel seen, heard, and valued. Our hope is that this will empower our families to advocate for themselves and their loved ones with Down syndrome, leading to greater self-determination and empowerment.

Programs & Collaborations

BDSA offers educational seminars on various topics to empower families with knowledge and tools to navigate important aspects of their journey, such as individualized education plans (IEPs), transitioning into adult services, mental health awareness and support, and establishing healthy boundaries.

By partnering with local, national, and global Down syndrome organizations, BDSA is extending our reach and collaborating to better support Black families within the Down syndrome community. This collaborative approach will not only benefit the families that we directly serve but also contribute to broader awareness and understanding within the larger Down syndrome community.

We are grateful that the Down syndrome community has warmly received BDSA as a much-needed resource. Representation and positive imagery are vital for individuals to see themselves reflected in all aspects of life. As Black mothers to Black boys, we understand the significance of uplifting and affirming images, providing a powerful source of inspiration and motivation.
