Medicare, Medicaid and Dual Enrollment for Adults with IDD
Boston University School of Public Health recently published an article in Health Services Research Journal entitled Medicare, Medicaid, and Dual Enrollment for Adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities. The research group looked at all adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities in Medicaid and Medicare over 9 years and described enrollment patterns. In the study researchers highlight the major service Medicare provides, especially in adults with IDD under 65 years of age. Additionally, specific enrollment patterns by IDD type (autism, intellectual disability, and Down syndrome) were reviewed.
Study Conclusion:
500,000 adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities rely on Medicare, with 75% being dual enrolled in Medicaid. Action is needed to ensure all are insured in the program that works for their healthcare needs.
